Dissemination Meeting in Sarajevo

May 29th, 2014

We have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the Dissemination Meeting of the FP7 project SERSCIDA - Support for Establishment of National/Regional Social Sciences Data Archives, which will take place on May 29th, 2014 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This international conference is being organised jointly by the Human Rights Centre of the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences FORS, the United Kingdom Data Archive UKDA, the Swedish National Data Service SND, the Slovenian Social Science Data Service ADP, the Philosophy Faculty of University of Zagreb (Croatia), and the Institute of Economic Sciences, Belgrade.

During this meeting we will present results of the project and discuss central issues pertaining to social science and humanities research data. This will include:

  • presentations of data archive/service prototypes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Croatia;
  • discussion of policy implications of data archiving: funding of data services as long-term objectives of governments to preserve data originated from publicly funded research; strategic issues in funding social science research; why we need strong policies in data management as a starting point for strengthening the social science landscape in the region;
  • discussion of the impact of data services on social science research, open access data, and the benefits of sharing for the research community; how data services may strengthen the position of researchers in fundraising, secondary analysis of previously collected data, and advancement of social science and humanities research; and
  • strengthening of the network between data services, government institutions, and experts in the project partner countries.

Conference participants will include data service leaders from around Europe (Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), researchers in the social sciences and humanities, as well as decision-makers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia.

We look forward to meeting you in Sarajevo.

Travel information

TRAVEL: From/to the airport. The taxis at the airport are a rip off, usually charge you 2-3 times the actual price and expect to get paid anywhere from 20 to 40 Euro. If you provide me with times of your arrivals we can arrange for taxis from the city to pick you up and you will be charged the usual 12-15 BAM (6.14-7.67 Euro) one way, depending on traffic. Otherwise you can call taxis that come to the airport within 5/10 min, CRVENI TAXI +387 33 760 600, SARAJEVO TAXI +387 660 970. To/from the city centre. The city centre is quite easy to access by public transport and one can take the tram from the Hotel (Sarajevo) to the Centre, 20 min drive (tram, ticket for each trip is 1.60 BAM – 0.82 Euro), you need to buy them at a kiosk. When you enter the tram there are small machines at the beginning and the end of the tram where you electronically punch them. Alternatively a taxi should take 15 min maximum and would cost 4-5BAM (2-2.5 Euro). The Google Maps says it should take 30 min brisk walking. Hotel Italija we would suggest taxis, which should be about the same amount as from Hotel Sarajevo. Hotel Astra Garni is already in the city centre.

CURRENCY: is Bosnian Mark, and the rate of exchange to Euros is 1.95583 and its value fixed to Euro, and this rate of exchange does not fluctuate as it does with other currencies. You can pay only in Bosnian Mark (the local abbreviation is KM) and not in Euro as it was possible sometime before.

LUNCH AND DINNER: Apart from the lunch and dinner on the day of the Dissemination Meeting, 29th of May, we will ask you to plan to pay your own lunch and dinners. The cost of a lunch should be around 10 Euro, while dinners are 15-20 Euros. Of course, local dishes, or local fast-food places – CEVABDZINICA – kebab place will sell a full portion of kebab for 3-4 Euro, or BUREGDZINICA – pastry pie shops will charge 1.5 Euro per half kilo of a potato pastry pie, 2 Euro for a cheese or spinach pastry pie and 2.5 Euro for a meat (beef) pastry pie.

TIME OFF: for those arriving earlier on the 28th of May, the Human Rights Centre Director, Saša Madacki (mobile 387 61 219 980) will be at the Hotel Sarajevo at 18.00-19.00 to welcome you and have a drink. WATCH YOUR POCKETS, BAGS, AND BACKPACKS! WE HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM WITH PICK POCKETS AND MANY PEOPLE FROM SARAJEVO AND MANY PEOPLE VISITING SARAJEVO HAVE BEEN ROBBED OF THEIR WALLETS, MONEY, HANDBAGS, MOBILE PHONES, AND LAPTOP BAGS. IN PARTICULAR WHEN YOU ARE IN A TRAM MAKE SURE YOUR BAGS ARE IN FRONT OF YOU AND IF THERE ARE PEOPLE LEANING INTO YOU MAKE SURE YOU MOVE AWAY IMMEDIATELY. FOR THIS PURPOSE, THE TRAVEL FOR THE MORNING SESSIONS - WHEN THE TRAMS ARE FULL DUE TO THE RUSH HOUR - ARE BETTER DONE IN TAXIS AND BY WALKING!!!

Open Access

'Open Access' refers to the practice of granting free Internet access to research publications and data. As all research and innovation builds on earlier achievements, an efficient system for broad dissemination of and access to research publications and raw data can accelerate scientific progress. The OECD Declaration of 2008 states "that open access to, and unrestricted use of data promotes scientific progress and facilitates the training of researchers," as well as maximizing "the value derived from public investments in data collection efforts." SERSCIDA will address the need for improved and open access to and dissemination of primary data collected through research in social sciences while at the same time trying to support reinforcement of the existing national strategies and structures, and to contribute to development of new ones.
